Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications showed that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the technology organization stated it respected the economist's determination to resign.
"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has said he intends to endorse the measure, after changing his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails revealed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the wider community, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to continue communicating with the financier".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
Summers occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be associated with the organization.
The former official became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
