Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Claim Sentimental Win Over Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out around the ground as Forest followers reveled in a further result against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's winning header secured the continental trophy in 1979, but the club continue to cherish those glorious moments. Equally, major shifts have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and securing a comfortable win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the European competition.
Building Momentum with Another Straight Victory
For Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third consecutive win across every tournament and further built on the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this match was a reminder of the club's historic success in name, the game itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.
It proved to be an event dripping in sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.
Forest leaned into the history, honoring the heroes of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s team from then were additionally in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together prior to the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a giant banner, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the players emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another brilliant display depicted Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Outset
So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the showing on the evening? It was strong, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an attempt wide inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.
It seemed appropriate that Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defense led by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
Another Strike Confirms Dominance
The scorer was involved in Forest’s next goal on the brink of the interval, as well, his free header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards Yates at the back post.
Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free the defender had earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalie Olsen.
Malmö’s Difficulties
This was the Swedish side's initial game since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a corner. Yates had a volley stopped, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.
Forest then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the side that surprised the Reds at their ground recently, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the final period.
Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team
It proved a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game already boxed off and later introduced teenage full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. He discussed the club legends supplying “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of producing of thrills, too.
