Cliff Scaling in the Peaks
Even complete newcomers will soon be ascending protected Peak District rock faces on this two-day session. Participants will learn securing the rope, belaying and several climbing techniques, plus abseiling down. Capped at a half-dozen students to each tutor, there is significant personalized coaching and tailored objectives. The training is appropriate for all individuals over the age of 13 and over, from first-time climbers to those with limited indoor experience. It is non-residential course, but you can find a selection of recommended, affordable lodging in the vicinity, including campgrounds, hostels, B&Bs and pubs with rooms. The base is a short stroll from the local train station, located on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

Non-Representational Art in Spain
This historic hillside village, a ancient white village in southern Spain, around a short drive from Granada, is the breathtaking setting for this painting holiday. Painters of all abilities – even beginners – will be taught how to design and produce modern art. Some time will be spent outdoors, working on structured activities out in nature. These initial sketches and paintings will then be developed in the workspace, with participants producing a number of interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be displayed in the local community. The group has sole use of the hotel, which is set around an open courtyard and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the hills. The cost encompasses five days of art instruction; all meals; and an outing to the local castle and other points of interest.

Vegetarian Culinary in Portugal
This Mediterranean foodie getaway, based at a riverside villa in the central Algarve, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Guests will learn to produce selection of small dishes, take part in a falafel-making workshop, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. The schedule includes visits to the village market and a nearby winery to sample local vintages, combined with leisure time for strolls by the nearby river, to unwind on the terrace or take a dip in the pool. The farmhouse, a former farmhouse, has five bedrooms, plus safari tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in High Wycombe
Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an energizing, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format each day is a high-energy group warmup, followed by several hour-and-a-half classes teaching different urban dance forms, then an hour-long freestyle session to show off those solos. Dancers are divided into levels based on ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or teachers. The camp does not provide lodging but there are a number of hostels and hotels nearby, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into central London.

Sea Shanty Break in Cornwall
This coastal town is the ideal location for a maritime music retreat. Guests will learn traditional shanties from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. There will be vocal warmups, breathing exercises, performance tips and a final evening concert. The retreat is held in a rural hotel with views of the bay. All meals are included, including a Cornish cream tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not provided. Creative Writing in Crete
Writer and lecturer Greg Mosse conducts the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He explores everything from story structure, characters, setting and suspense, to submitting work to publishers. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the beginning and end of the week. The retreat is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the base of the Lefka Ori – 10 private accommodations surround a central garden with a pool (non-writing partners are encouraged to share). On the last night, budding authors mark the occasion with a musical performance in the courtyard and a final meal.

Introduction to Beekeeping in Wales
A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a host of courses on sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling.
