The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Playoff Decider
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
